Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) are urban areas with net annual energy export, and net zero Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, in an affordable way for the population.
Positive Energy Districts
There is no single strategy for the geographical application of the CSP concept due to different planning cultures and ownership structures.
Each legal framework in each population requires different approaches and strategies.
different approaches and strategies.
There are several types of district:
Autonomous: a district with clear geographical boundaries that is completely energy self-sufficient. It can export surpluses.
Dynamic: a district with clear geographical boundaries with an annual generation of on-site renewable energy in excess of its annual energy demand.
Virtual: a district that allows the implementation of virtual renewable energy systems and energy storage outside its geographical boundaries.
CSPs are based on maximising the use of renewable energy supply based on renewable energy systems (RES).
based renewable energy systems (RES), distributed within the district’s geographic boundary, and/or through local energy sources adjacent to the district.
Benefits of CSPs:
– Improved district resilience.
– Better utilisation of RES, better generation-demand matching, optimised investment
– Economic savings on balance sheet
– Revaluation of the district
– Improved environmental and quality of life, especially for the most vulnerable.
– Improved coexistence between inhabitants and sense of belonging to the district.
– New business models and increased employment.
