🌍 The Chair presents two studies on decarbonisation and energy communities at The Energy and Sustainability Conference

The Chair of Urban Energy Transition participated in The Energy and Sustainability Conference, held in Crete, a European meeting between academia, the public sector and industry to advance energy efficiency and urban sustainability.

Our director, Carla Montagud-Montalvá, presented the study ‘Towards Carbon-Neutral Neighbourhoods: A Case Study in Valencia, Spain’, developed together with Carlos Vargas Salgado, Zaira Tapia Sinesio, David Alfonso-Solar and Álvaro Manso Burgos.
🏙️ The study applies a detailed methodology to assess direct and indirect emissions (scopes 1 and 2) in the Benicalap neighbourhood (Valencia), proposing a roadmap towards its decarbonisation. Among the measures analysed are the installation of photovoltaic systems, the energy refurbishment of buildings, the promotion of sustainable transport, the replacement of gas cookers with induction hobs, efficient lighting and nature-based solutions.

For his part, Álvaro Manso Burgos presented the study ‘Beyond Self-Consumption: Unlocking Battery Storage Value in Energy Communities via Ancillary Services’, developed together with David Ribó Pérez and Tomás Gómez Navarro.
⚡️ This work explores how participation in electricity system adjustment services allows energy communities with shared batteries to access additional income and improve their economic viability, contributing to the stability of the system beyond self-consumption.

💡 Both studies are part of the Chair’s lines of research and have been supported by the Valencia City Council, through the Valencia Innovation Capital and Valencia Clima I Energia Foundations, as well as the collaboration of the European projects SHERLOCK and RES4CITY, which promote a fair and sustainable energy transition based on knowledge, innovation and cooperation between territories.

👏 We would like to thank the Technical University of Crete, the University of Genoa, the European Education and Learning Institute and the Municipality of Chania for organising this international meeting, which promotes dialogue and collaboration towards more sustainable cities.
