Green roofs can be much more than just an aesthetic element in the city: they are an effective tool for improving air quality and reducing emissions. The new article, in which the Chair’s team participates, proposes an innovative methodology, based on artificial vision and geospatial analysis, to locate which rooftops are suitable for installation and calculate the CO₂ they could capture.

Applied to Valencia, the study reveals that 34% of the city’s roofs — more than 6 million m² — would be suitable for this type of solution, with a potential absorption of almost 20,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year.

This work reinforces the importance of committing to nature-based solutions in order to move towards more sustainable and resilient cities.
