The world is changing, and our cities are at the centre of this transformation. At the Chair of Urban Energy Transition at the UPV, we are clear that the future of cities does not only depend on technology or research, but also on our ability to imagine a new model of urban life, one that is sustainable, efficient and inclusive.

For decades, cities have been engines of progress and development, but also the biggest consumers of energy and resources. With more than 70% of global CO₂ emissions generated in urban areas, it is clear that climate change and the environmental crisis will not be resolved without directly addressing how we live, work and move around in them. That is why, in our chair, we work every day to promote concrete and effective solutions that promote a just energy transition.

What is the urban energy transition?

The urban energy transition is a transformative process that involves reimagining and redesigning our cities to make them more sustainable. This includes: Promoting renewable energy, taking advantage of sources such as solar, wind or geothermal to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Optimising the use of resources, implementing more efficient systems that minimise energy waste and reduce the carbon footprint. Promote sustainable mobility, promoting clean transport alternatives such as bicycles, electric vehicles or efficient public transport. Develop resilient infrastructures, adapting our cities to the impacts of climate change to guarantee their long-term habitability.

But the transition is not only technical; it also has a social component. It is an opportunity to reduce inequalities, generate new economic opportunities and improve the quality of life of the people who live in our cities.

Our commitment from the Chair

At the Chair of Urban Energy Transition UPV, we combine research, innovation and collaboration to lead this change. From the academic sphere, we work on projects that seek practical and scalable solutions to urban energy challenges. We collaborate with companies, public administrations and other social agents to take these ideas beyond the paper. We believe that only by working together can we achieve the ambitious goals we have set ourselves as a society.

Over the years, we have developed initiatives in areas such as energy management, designing strategies to maximise energy efficiency in buildings and infrastructure. We have also worked on the integration of renewable energies, studying ways to incorporate clean sources into urban environments, and on sustainable urban planning, developing models that prioritise sustainability and quality of life. In addition, we have promoted solutions for clean urban mobility, reducing transport emissions. Our work is more than academic endeavour; it is a commitment to the future.

A video that reflects our vision

To publicise our mission and the goals that inspire us, we have created a video that captures the essence of our work. We want everyone to know the importance of the urban energy transition and how we at the UPV are contributing to it.

This video is an invitation to all those who believe in a more sustainable future. In it we show not only what we do, but also the impact we want to achieve in the world. It is a reflection of our vision and a reminder that change is possible if we work together.

Why is the urban energy transition so important?

For the planet: Cities are home to 55% of the world’s population and generate the majority of CO₂ emissions. Reforming their energy model is key to curbing climate change. For people: A more sustainable city not only reduces its environmental impact, but also improves the quality of life of its inhabitants, fosters equity and promotes more inclusive communities. For innovation: The energy transition is an engine of economic development. It drives new technology sectors, generates employment and promotes research and development. In a world where time is pressing, every step we take in the right direction will make a difference.
